Grading Assessments

Assessments Junior Grades (red, yellow and orange belts – up to 9th Mon)

To obtain these grades a player must pass a theory assessment. The assessment requires the player to demonstrate various techniques and show an understanding of judo terminology. Gradings up to 9th Mon are completed within the club.

It is unusual for a junior player to be promoted by more then 1 Mon at any assessment.

Ideally players should participate in red belt competitions (up to 3rd mon) before progressing to 4th mon (yellow belt) and mini mon competitions (up to 6th mon) before considering going for promotion to 7th mon (orange belt)

Higher Junior Grades (orange belt 10th Mon and above)

For 10th Mon and above, gradings may be completed within the club but players may also grade at Inter‐club, area promotion examinations and at any other event such as a Technical Training course.

Minimum Age

The minimum age a player may attempt promotion is 5 years of age. The recommended maximum grade that can be held before the age of 8 is 6th Mon.

Players may choose to seek promotion under the Senior Kyu Grade syllabus on reaching 14 years of age. Players are encouraged seek advice from their coach on whether they should seek promotion under the Senior Kyu Grade Syllabus.

Senior Grades

Promotion within the Kyu grades is based on technical knowledge and understanding, together with Japanese terminology and supplementary knowledge. There is no contest requirement in the Kyu Grade syllabus however there is a progressively structured Randori element at the higher grades, where at the highest level, Randori is based on open skills.

For grades up to and including 4th Kyu, promotion examinations are completed within the club, for 3rd Kyu and above, promotion examinations may be completed within the club but candidates may also grade at Inter‐club, area promotion examinations and at any other event such as a Technical Training course.

Dan grades are obtained through a points system based on the number of wins against an equal or higher grade at BJA licensed competitions or at gradings.
